Before booking a T1–T2 connection at MEX, check each flight’s terminal, the destination on your baggage tag and the next flight’s deadlines. Aerotrén travel time is not connection time. Collecting a bag, completing formalities and checking it again can change the entire route through the airport.
This guide covers a terminal change inside Mexico City International Airport. If the next flight leaves from NLU, that is a different airport and the Aerotrén will not take you there. Check both three-letter codes on the booking and use the MEX airport guide for general orientation.
Identify the connection first
| Situation | Information to request | Effect on your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Both flights at MEX, same terminal | Gate and transfer procedure | Avoid adding an unnecessary building change |
| Both flights at MEX, different terminals | Available transport and access documents | Add the walk to and from transport |
| International arrival, domestic continuation | Where to collect and hand over bags | Include customs and the next bag drop |
| Separate tickets | Check-in, baggage and missed-flight responsibility | Prepare for a new departure under your booking terms |
| Next flight shows NLU or another code | Airport and ground transfer | Rework the itinerary before buying |
Do not identify the terminal only from the brand that sold the ticket. Check the operating carrier and its current terminal assignment. Recheck when a flight-change message arrives, even if the destination stays the same.
Ask about baggage at the first airport
The AICM passenger FAQ says passengers arriving internationally and continuing on a domestic flight must reclaim baggage for customs. It also asks travellers to confirm the procedure with their airline. Use this guidance to ask where you collect and hand over bags on your particular itinerary.
Before leaving the first check-in desk, inspect the destination code on the tag and keep the receipt. Ask whether you use a transfer-baggage point or the next flight’s check-in desk. Hearing that a bag is tagged “to the destination” does not explain what you must do during the connection.
With cabin baggage only, you still need to confirm the route and relevant checks. Removing one bag-handling task does not guarantee a short connection.
Aerotrén: normal hours and access
AICM’s official guide publishes normal hours of 05:00–23:00, with free access on presentation of an airline ticket. Its FAQ explains eligibility for transit or connecting passengers with the relevant travel documents. Keep your itinerary and boarding pass accessible.
Published hours do not confirm that the service is running when you land. Check airport notices and signs. During an interruption, ask staff for the location and terms of the replacement transport. Do not reuse a bus-stop location from an old maintenance announcement.
If someone needs assistance, ask the airline how it will arrange the handover between flights and terminals. Do not assume the person helping at arrival will accompany you throughout the transfer. Include meeting the next assistance team in your plan.
Work backwards from the deadline
Copy the airline’s check-in, baggage-drop and gate deadlines. These are different milestones. Work backwards from the first one that requires your presence, adding each task your journey actually needs.
Available margin = time between flights − leaving the aircraft − checks and baggage − terminal transfer − next-flight formalities. This is a planning structure, not an AICM time estimate. If a component is unknown, mark it for confirmation instead of replacing it with zero.
For separate tickets, ask the seller what happens if the first flight is late. Buying both flights on one screen does not prove that the connection is protected. An option with fewer changes may be worth comparing even when its starting fare is higher.
Checklist before paying and before travelling
- Confirm MEX on both flights and record the booked T1 or T2 assignment.
- Save the whole itinerary and seller contact details.
- Confirm baggage collection and handover arrangements.
- Record the next flight’s deadlines as well as departure time.
- Check the transfer available at your arrival time.
- Arrange assistance and an alternative if you miss the connection.
Compare options in the flight catalogue, record the steps in your trip planner and add necessary accommodation or transport to the trip budget. Use quotes for your date. This guide provides no universal connection time that guarantees reaching the gate.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Aerotrén connect AICM with AIFA?
No. This transfer is between T1 and T2 at MEX. If the next flight shows NLU, plan a transfer between airports.
Can I calculate a connection using only the Aerotrén journey?
No. Add leaving the aircraft, checks, baggage, waiting, transport and the next flight’s deadlines.
Must I collect bags after an international arrival before a domestic flight?
AICM says to reclaim them for customs in that situation. Confirm where to collect and hand over the bags for your itinerary with your airline.
Sources and review scope
Checked AICM guidance on international-to-domestic baggage, Aerotrén eligibility and its published normal hours. Live operation, a specific airline’s terminal, minimum connection times and queue durations were not verified. The planning method is editorial advice.
